The constituency of Edinburgh East lies to the east of the City of Edinburgh, and consists of all or part of seven City of Edinburgh Council wards. The constituency currently has an electorate of 65,154. Edinburgh East has been represented by a Labour Member of Parliament since 1924, and by Gavin Strang since 1970. His majority at the 2005 election was 6,202.
